7 Scriptures for Fighting Fear

Fear used to be something that was such a stronghold for me to overcome. It would grip me at the slightest thing.
Last week, I had the opportunity to see just how much my faith in the Lord has grown, and there are some scriptures I want to share that have helped me along the way in my journey. But first, let’s talk about last week.
Little Andy boy is now eating solid foods. So last Monday I decided to give him some eggs, because why not. I had the green light from the doctor to give him anything as he now has 2 little front teeth (insert face holding back tears emoji), and can chew and explore different foods, yay! Well, the whole egg situation did not turn out as planned.
Within minutes, Andy boy started vomiting and breaking out in hives all over his little body! We kept a close eye on him, and got the girls out the door for school. As soon as they left, I just held him and declared healing over him, and that the allergic reaction wouldn’t get worse, but would subside.
He eventually ended up being fine, but I’d be lying to you if I didn’t tell you I felt a key moment where there was a crossroads of faith and fear. Fear was tugging at me—I could feel it. The only way to describe it is like when a kid tugs at your pants needing your attention. They may be all the way at the bottom of your leg trying to get your attention. You could be washing dishes or in a conversation or doing something else that has your attention, but no matter how hard you try to focus, you just can’t seem to ignore that tug.
This felt the same—it was just there fighting for my attention. So I gave it the attention it was looking for, but not in the way it was looking for. A strength and faith rose up in me as the immediate reaction, which is not the default for me. My default is worse case scenario-or should I say, has been worse case scenario. Hello new season! Of course we googled and read the levels of reactions to eggs in babies, because all good parents consult Dr. Google to know what to do! Kidding! But I knew in my gut that everything was gonna be fine. And I knew in my gut that prayer was the response needed.
I know I talk about this a lot, but it’s only because certain life events have marked me. When you walk through loss, sudden loss, and trauma—they affect your lens. Your world view is seen through this event you never thought would happen to you. Not that I live from a place of trauma, but somewhere along the way of the different losses throughout the past few years, I allowed fear to really step in and shift my responses to situations—especially when it comes to my husband and children. But, God has been doing a course correction in my life this past year, and that fear response is shifting into an immediate faith response.
The Word has been such an anchor for me. I have stories upon stories of how the Word literally transformed moments in my life. The Word was my medicine when I had two failed epidurals during labor with Olivia—literally quoting scripture (Philippians 4:13) got me through! It was there for me through the night of miscarrying my sweet baby—quoting the scripture (Psalms 23:1-6) over and over again was literally comfort and a friend to Andrew and me. It’s been food when I’ve been fasting, strength on a hard day, joy in sorrow, and direction when I’ve longed for clarity.
Beyond just words on a pice of paper, the Bible is alive and active. The Word was God, from the beginning of time! He is alive and active, and so is His Word. I love the Word of God, and my hope is that this precious book would burn in all of our hearts and be the blueprint for everything we say and do.
Here are seven scriptures for fighting fear the next time the opportunity arises to test your faith:
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.—Isaiah 41:10
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.—Psalm 23:4
The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?—Psalm 118:6
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid—John 14:27
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.—Deuteronomy 31:6
Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God himself will fight for you.—Deuteronomy 3:22
Do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn, yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?—Luke 12:22-26
I hope these verses are an encouragement to you. We need not live in fear because God Himself goes before us and fights for us. This isn’t to say fear won’t come, but we have to address it quickly and not stay there. There is a real enemy that would love to control our minds and thoughts and cause us to live in fear and worry and anxiety. But there is a real God who won’t let that happen if we fully surrender to Him, especially in the hard places. I am so thankful for this truth.
Friends, let’s continue to chose faith over fear. It’s not always easy, but we’ve got this. You’ve got this.
Thanks for joining in on today’s blog! Til next week :)
